Mary Baker Eddy Girl Scout Badge Workshop
Girl Scouts Learn about Mary Baker Eddy!
On two Sunday afternoons (March 31 and April 7), the Richardson Christian Science Reading Room hosted a girl scout badge workshop focused on learning about Mary Baker Eddy: who she was, what she did, when she did it, and what life was like during her time.
Over 15 girls attended each Sunday, including Brownies, Juniors, and Cadettes. (And there was a waiting list of more that wanted to come!)
The workshop began with a discussion of how ice cream was made back in the late 1800’s, and a fresh batch of homemade ice cream was started.
The girls then watched a 10 minute video from the Mary Baker Eddy Library called: Mary Baker Eddy: Her Life and Legacy. See video below:
After a question and answer period about the video and what life was like for a woman in the 1880’s, the girls split up into separate groups according to their program level to work on these badges:
Brownies: Inventor
Juniors: Playing the Past
Cadettes: Science of Happiness
At each level, we introduced the girls to the Christian Science Monitor’s “People Making a Difference” section, discussed why Mary Baker Eddy started the Monitor, and encouraged each girl to write or discuss how they would “Make a Difference.”
Mary Baker Eddy had a cross stitch on her wall that said, “Do Right, Fear Not.” We introduced this idea to the girls and taught them how to do a simple cross stitch on a piece of card stock, which they were encouraged to finish at home.
After teaching the girls how to play a 19th century game of Cat’s Cradle, they presented skits incorporating “Do Right, Fear Not” or their ideas on Making a Difference.
We closed out the workshop by eating Mrs. Eddy’s favorite afternoon snack - homemade ice cream, and sent them all home with a certificate of completion for their badges.
